What the module covered
This module covered the iterative design process through workshops on consent, personas, interview analysis, ideation, prototyping, and usability evaluation. We used Design Thinking and the Double Diamond to connect research findings to design decisions.
Our group project explored how households could use electricity more efficiently. We reviewed literature and analysed interview transcripts, compared several concepts, and developed a low-fidelity Figma prototype for an app that helped household members manage and schedule smart devices. Evaluating the prototype exposed gaps in how clearly it explained its purpose and features.
What I took from it
I found quick paper sketches and in-person discussion particularly useful for developing ideas, while Figma made it easier to contribute remotely. I also adapted the workshop approach for our interview analysis by asking the group to read transcripts before meeting, leaving more time for discussion.
The main lesson was that evaluation can send a design back to earlier stages. A prototype is useful partly because it reveals misunderstandings, including assumptions about users that need revisiting before refining the interface.
